The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has begun a new consumer research project to examine the challenges facing tenants and landlords in the private rented market. The initiative was launched on 28 February 2023 after the regulator identified a range of issues during its leasehold investigation and set out to map concerns across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Regulator of Social Housing issued a formal notice on Wednesday 25 October 2023, finding that Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust had breached the sector’s rent standard. The regulator’s investigation revealed that the trust had wrongly classified a number of its homes as supported housing, resulting in tenants being overcharged.
The Competition and Markets Authority has released an update on two major investigations that affect where people live – a consumer‑protection project into the private rented sector and a market study into housebuilding – both of which were launched in February 2023. The regulator says it will move into a more intensive phase of work, aiming to protect tenants and ensure competition in the supply of new homes.
